My life partner, Lynda, suffered from depression and anxiety from the time she was 16 years old, before the 'powers that be' made the decision that all mental illness could be treated by drugs alone, without the support of psychotherapy and other treatment. Lynda managed to live with a small amount of normality until, at the age of 30, the drugs stopped working and things started going downhill rapidly. We lived together for some 18 years and I watched her, day-by-day, lose all hope of ever living a life with some peace or well being.

My name is Francis. I am a 31 year old mental health consumer with bi-polar disorder. I live in a group home in Halifax. I find that group homes have taught me about confidence building, discipline, structure and life skills. However group homes aren't for everyone.
We must never give up on a person's chances to fully recover. I find that stigma is a huge barrier in everyday life and we must find ways to reduce stigma. I also feel that wait list for group homes and apartment programs has to be much, much better. If a person is ready to move into independent living they should not have to wait for such a long period of time.

Our son, 23, has schizophrenia, and he lives with us. Our close family members are aware of it, and his health care workers are aware of it, but no one else. Unfortunately, this is not an illness that receives a lot of support and understanding, so to protect ourselves and him, we remain silent. He also suffers from severe anxiety and doesn't leave the house alone. He is quite smart, reads anything and everything. His room is filled with books, Hemingway, Dickens, etc.
